The school day usually starts with ‘meeting’. The children sit in a circle, with one child chairing the meeting. Everyone has a chance to contribute; sharing news, ideas, opinions, etc. This gives the children the opportunity to talk, to express themselves and to be heard. Meeting is often followed by a book reading which all children listen to together. Other morning activities include: writing, reading, mathematics with the children working in small groups or individually. At lunch time children may prepare their own lunch in the kitchen with the help of a roster parent. Everyone eats together in our dining area. There is also a weekly cafĂ©. During ‘choosing time’ after lunch, children pursue their own activities. This can involve anything from playing together inside or outside, to working on projects, or creating a ‘kidnastics’ performance. The role of parents and teachers at this time is a supporting one. Adults may be invited to participate in children’s games or activities or to help with projects. Adults can also offer an activity at this time. The final part of the day is devoted to another structured activity or elective which may include: Science, Technology, SOSE, Sport, Art/craft etc. 9am to 10.30am Morning meeting/Stories, Language activities, Philosophy 10.30am to 11am Morning Tea 11am to 12pm Mathematical Activities 12pm to 1pm Lunch 1pm to 2pm Choosing Time.
