We believe that the creative potential and curiosity of young children is best nurtured in a happy, non-competitive environment where people are trusted and respected. Children learn best and enjoy learning in an emotionally secure environment where they can learn at their own pace. We provide an education which is child-centred rather than one which sets norms and standards in an impersonal and generalised way. We understand the role of teachers and parents as one of encouraging children to make choices in their acquisition of knowledge and skills, as well as inspiring and leading them into new areas and challenges. We accept that children are individuals who have different temperaments and different interests. They do not progress at the same rate, nor is their progress a smooth continuum: we recognise that there are sudden leaps forward and static periods, as well as regressions. We believe that the best education is holistic. Development of confidence, self-esteem, respect and care for others is integral to the development of intellect and creativity. Children don’t just learn skills in isolation but as part of a human situation. Although we strive for academic excellence we do not put this above the physical, emotional or social well-being of the child. We encourage children’s sense of ownership of and belonging to the school. Children have freedom of movement within the school and free access to all areas. Members of the school community are committed to the best possible all-round development and happiness of all our children.
